The new Dell XPS 13 laptop will cost $999.99 when it launches on January 7 — here's everything you need to know

Dell XPS 13 2020

  • Dell has just announced its flagship Dell XPS 13 laptop for 2020, well ahead of the CES 2020 rush, and it’s a major revision for the device.
  • This is an all-new frame design for Dell, featuring a four-sided “InfinityEdge” display for a larger screen size than ever, an edge-to-keyboard with larger keys, and up to 19-plus hours of battery life.
  • As for the cost, Dell is setting the starting Dell XPS 13 price to the same as it was last year: $999.99 when it launches on January 7.

With CES 2020 on the horizon, it’s already time to see a new Dell XPS 13 laptop. Hot on heels of releasing a minor revision of its January 2019 model around September of last year, Dell has announced its 2020 Dell XPS 13 laptop.

This is a brand new design — available in the same silver-on-black and all-white colors as before — that incorporates new features on the outside and powerful mainstream hardware on the inside. When the laptop hits online stores and retailer shelves on January 7, the Dell XPS 13 price will start at $999.99.

Dell is keeping par for the course in terms of pricing while making several marked improvements. The most notable upgrades include an even larger display than ever before, 13.4 inches with a taller 16:10 aspect ratio, thanks to a four-sided “InfinityEdge” display — which means all four bezels are now super-thin.

Beyond that, the Dell XPS 13 keyboard has been widened with the keys enlarged, and the trackpad has been widened as well. Even with these changes, the XPS 13 is actually slightly lighter than before, though you likely won’t notice it.

So, what does that $999.99 Dell XPS 13 price tag actually get you on the inside? Here’s a hardware breakdown for the starting configuration:

  • Processor (CPU): 10th Generation Intel Core i3 (1.2GHz, dual-core)
  • Graphics: Intel UHD Graphics (300MHz)
  • Display: 13.4-inch Full HD non-touch (1,920 x 1,080, 500 nits brightness)
  • Memory (RAM): 4GB LPDDR4 (3,733MHz)
  • Storage: 256GB SSD (PCIe)
  • Ports: 2 x Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C), microSD card reader, headphone jack

While this certainly isn’t bad at all for a $999.99 laptop, we’d honestly expect a bit more for the price. For instance, most laptops at this price contain 8GB of RAM, which we’d consider to be the bare minimum for any laptop approaching a thousand dollars in price. Also, most laptops about this expensive feature Intel Core i5 CPUs and beyond-HD displays, like the latest MacBook Air model.

That said, we do appreciate the larger solid-state drive, or SSD, which is unfortunately somewhat rare at $999.99. We won’t say just yet whether you should buy it on January 7 — not until a full review — but we will say that we’re excited to see Dell making marked improvements for the same starting price as before.

This is all we know for now when it comes to the Dell XPS 13 price. Come back for a deeper breakdown of the available configurations around January 7.
