Thomasin McKenzie has played some great roles in films like The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies, Leave No Trace, and The King, but she stole hearts everywhere last year when she played the Jewish girl hiding in the wall in the incredible film Jojo Rabbit. This proved her acting chops, and made me want to watch everything she does from now on. She’s set to be in the upcoming film The Power of the Dog, alongside Kirsten Dunst and Benedict Cumberbatch, as well as Last Night in Soho with Anya Taylor-Joy and Matt Smith. She has also been cast in M. Night Shyamalan’s next project at Universal.

So she has a lot of things in the pipeline, but has added one more project as well. McKenzie is set to star in Joika as American ballerina Joy Womack. McKenzie has an incredibly tough road ahead of her, as Womack is “only the second American to graduate from Moscow’s infamously tough Bolshoi Ballet Academy,” and “is personally overseeing McKenzie’s training and will act as the actress’s double for more demanding sequences.”

Here’s the synopsis:

The film will chart the dancer’s intense training, which tested the limits of her dedication, determination, sacrifice and virtuosity, and how she was spurred on by the passions of first love. Womack, now 26, went on to become the principal dancer with the Universal Ballet in Korea then returned to America where she dances with the Boston Ballet. ‘Joika’ was the name Womack was given in Russia.

The film will begin shooting in early 2021, and should be an incredible story to see play out on the big screen. Will you be checking it out?
