SC extends interim protection to activist Teesta Setalvad against arrest by four more weeks

New Delhi(PTI): SC extends interim protection to activist Teesta Setalvad against arrest by four more weeks in alleged fund embezzlement case. The Supreme Court has extended the stay on arrest of activist Teesta Setalvad and her husband Javed Anand in corruption case by four more weeks till October 15.

Teesta Setalvad’s FCRA account of Sabrang Trust has been suspended. The home ministry has suspended Teesta Setalvad’s NGO Sabrang Trust under the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act 2010. The activist has also been sent a notice for the cancellation of the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act licence.

All the forign funding has been freezed as the funding of the NGO Sabrang Trust includes diversion to also some non- FCRA entities, which have not been registered. The funds transfer also show some in personal gain and interest of Teesta Setalvad and her husband Javed Anand. The NGO has been suspended for 180 days post the notification and inspection of the records, which revealed the diversion to the non-FCRA registered entities.

The Bombay High Court had given anticipatory bail to both activist Teesta Setalvad and her husband Javed Anand in the FCRA violation case in August, as they found no threat to national security and public interest. It came as a relief to the activist couple post the fund embezzlement case.
