Shatrughan Sinha lets his party down again, BJP unlikely to act before elections

BJP MP Shatrughan Sinha has been unrelenting in his barbs against the party at a time when it is bracing up for a high stake battle for Bihar. On Monday, the actor-turned-politician from the state again tested the party’s patience by reiterating that ally and union minister Ram Vilas Paswan was best suited to be chief ministerial candidate. The BJP has been dismissive of his comments and is unlikely to take any disciplinary action till after elections. To repeated questions on whether the BJP planned to some action, highly placed sources quipped that the party will deal with it “after counting” of the Bihar votes. According to party sources, taking any action in the midst of the campaign would not only bring Sinha into the limelight but also leave him free to unleash a tirade against the party. The BJP has refrained from launching a counter-offensive against Sinha, who has repeatedly made statements that have irked the party.

“I believe we should have announced our CM candidate. Not putting forward a candidate is a result of some confusion in our own camp,” Sinha tweeted.

In another tweet, he said “I strongly suggest the able, capable, acceptable, respectable and secular Ram Vilas Paswan as the potential/consensus CM candidate of Bihar from our side.” The statement came just when Paswan’s LJP was putting pressure on BJP for more seats.

While the NDA has decided against putting up a chief ministerial candidate, it is taking on the Nitish Kumar-Lalu Prasad Yadav combine by projecting Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Sinha, who is apparently disgruntled as he feels sidelined, has praised chief minister Nitish Kumar publicly.
