NCP accuses central government of being involved in religious conversions in Uttar Pradesh

Mumbai(PTI): Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Tariq Anwar on Friday said that the central government is involved in the religious conversions in Agra, where 200 people were reportedly converted to Hinduism in a ceremony by groups linked to the BJP’s ideological mentor RSS.

“The central government is involved in the process of religion conversions. The false issue which Prime Minister Narendra Modi propagated before elections against the UPA is being practiced by him now,” Anwar said.

“Once they have got majority, they have lost the control and are thinking that they can do anything they want,” the NCP leader added.

Earlier, the Samajwadi Party had said that an FIR has been launched over the religious conversions in Agra by groups linked to the BJP’s ideological mentor RSS and assured the people of quick action.

However, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav had avoided commenting on the ongoing controversy, saying the opposition parties try to derive political benefits from any incident that happens in the state.

A united opposition mounted pressure on the BJP-led government in the Lok Sabha and demanded an explanation from the Centre over the conversions organized in Agra reportedly by groups linked to the RSS.

Around 200 people were reportedly converted to Hinduism in a ceremony in Agra by groups linked to the BJP’s ideological mentor RSS.

Bajrang Dal and Dharam Jagran Manch, the groups that performed the mass conversions, reportedly claimed that the families were originally Hindus and converted to Islam around 30 years ago. [PTI]
