Will Smith is teaming up with director Antoine Fuqua (Training Day) for a new project titled Emancipation. The film is based on the true story of a man named Peter, “a runaway slave forced to outwit cold-blooded hunters and the punishing Louisiana swamp on a tortuous journey to the Union Army and his only chance at freedom.”

Smith and Fuqua were working together on Warner Bros.’ biopic King Richard, in which Smith plays the father and coach of tennis icons Venus and Serena Williams. Production on that film project was halted when the virus pandemic shut everything down. Fuqua was in post-production on Paramount’s action thriller Infinite.

The script for Emancipation was written by William N. Collage, and production is expected to start early in 2021.

This is sure to make a powerful and heavy film, and the right talent has come on board to bring this story to life.
