Peter Jackson’s documentary The Beatles: Get Back is being delayed an extra year. The Beatles documentary originally had a release date of September 4th, 2020. The Oscar-winning Lord of the Rings filmmaker will draw from material shot in 1969 for the 1970 documentary Let It Be, and will rework the footage using modern production techniques. Jackson has previously used this technique in his work on the WWI film They Shall Not Grow Old, and will employ it again in an attempt to portray the band’s work on their final album in a more positive light.
The Beatles: Get Back has been delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic, as announced by Disney on Friday. Disney revealed the new release date to be August 27, 2021, nearly a full year out from the original release date. The news comes amid multiple other movie delays, and is part of Disney’s ongoing evaluation of when to release their upcoming films.
While practically every upcoming movie has had its release date pushed back, the delay of Jackson’s The Beatles: Get Back is surprising because it’s been pushed back for an entire year. As a reworking of previously recorded footage, one would think this documentary is one of the few projects whose work could continue largely uninterrupted by the pandemic, but that doesn’t appear to be true. In which case, fans looking forward to seeing The Beatles portrayed in a more upbeat light, as opposed to the 1970 film chronicling the band’s breakup, will now have their patience tested for another year as they await the release of The Beatles: Get Back.
