Josh Hamilton reportedly indicted on felony charge of injury to a child

Former Texas Rangers star Josh Hamilton was indicted Monday on a felony charge of injury to a child, after allegedly hitting his 14-year-old daughter on Sept. 30, according to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram and The Dallas Morning News.

It’s a third-degree felony on one count of injury to a child with intentional bodily injury. Hamilton turned himself in to police last October, and was released the same day on $35,000 bond.

Here are details of the allegations from the arrest warrant affidavit, via the Fort Worth Star-Telegram:

He was accused of throwing a water bottle at his oldest daughter, 14, and hitting her in the chest, according to an arrest warrant affidavit. Hamilton also grabbed the chair where his daughter had propped her feet and yanked it from under her, then tossed the chair in her direction, police said. According to the affidavit, the chair struck her leg. Hamilton then picked her up and carried her to her room, where he struck her in the back and legs, according to the affidavit.

He later picked her up by her sweatshirt, ripping it, and hit her on her back, she said.

According to the affidavit, after he stopped hitting his daughter, Hamilton said: “I hope you go in front of the [expletive] Judge and tell him what a terrible dad I am so I don’t have to see you anymore.”

Hamilton’s attorneys say he’s “innocent of the charge against him and looks forward to clearing his name in court,” according to The Dallas Morning News. He faces two to 10 years in prison if convicted.

Hamilton was selected to the All-Star Game for five straight seasons with the Rangers (2008-2012), and was named the 2010 AL MVP (as well as the 2010 ALCS MVP). He also played for the Cincinnati Reds (2007) and Los Angeles Angels (2013-2014).

The 38-year-old has had well-documented substance abuse issues (with a relapse as recently as 2015). but the Fort Worth Star-Telegram notes that Hamilton said last August that he remains sober.
