Clemson, Ohio State top early 2020-21 college football national championship odds

The 2019-2020 college football season is now over, with the LSU Tigers taking down the Clemson Tigers 42-25 to win the national championship and complete a remarkable season. And the odds for next year’s college football national champion are already out, because it’s never too early (okay, it probably is).

Jeff Sherman of the Westgate SuperBook tweeted the 2020-21 college football title odds shortly after LSU’s 2019-20 championship victory. Clemson lost the title game this time (after winning last year), but the Tigers are the early favorites to win next season’s national title, with 9/4 odds. Clemson is followed by Ohio State (3/1) and Alabama (6/1), and LSU and Georgia are tied for the fourth-best odds (8/1).

It’s not at all surprising that Clemson and Ohio State are the early favorites. Clemson is 25-1 (after Monday’s loss) with Trevor Lawrence at quarterback, and he’ll be entering his junior season (as likely the top NFL Draft prospect for the 2021 class). Ohio State went 13-1 this season (their only loss was to Clemson in the CFP), and will have Heisman candidate Justin Fields in his second season as their quarterback (he threw 41 touchdown passes, three interceptions, and finished third in Heisman voting).

LSU’s 8/1 odds are still very strong when you consider that Heisman winner Joe Burrow (and these insane numbers) will be gone. It says a lot about the program Ed Orgeron has built in Baton Rouge.
