What makes for a successful YouTube video in 2019?
If you don’t know the answer, don’t feel bad, neither does YouTube creator Joey Graceffa, who has been making videos for a decade and has over 9 million subscribers, as well as a popular YouTube Originals show, “Escape the Night.”
In a recent interview with Business Insider, Graceffa said he felt like there’s “no rhyme or reason to what makes a video successful” in 2019, and that the platform has evolved a lot in the past year. His videos, which once pulled an average 1 million to 2 million views 3 years ago, now range drastically from 300,000 views to 5 million views, and Graceffa said it’s become hard to pinpoint why.
“Once you think you know the rules, the rules change,” he said. “It’s frustrating in that sense, but at the same time, it does keep the job interesting, and it keeps it new and fresh.”
Still, Graceffa said he’s struggled to find what elements make for a hit video in 2019.
“It’s definitely super frustrating when you’re the creator because it’s almost like getting the rug pulled out from underneath you,” Graceffa said. “You’re almost at risk of losing your job constantly because you don’t really know the rules to the game.”
