NOIDA, 18 July-2014, TNN: National Commission for Women chairperson Mamata Sharma on Thursday slammed the UP police as the “most uncooperative” in the country.
UP police the “most uncooperative” when it comes to crime against women: National Commission for Women chairperson
“While UP tops the list when it comes to violence against women, its police is the most uncooperative in the country when it comes to working with us in investigations,” Sharma told TOI.
Asked about the alleged gang rape of a woman in a moving car in Ghaziabad and Noida earlier this month, a case in which the prime accused is yet to be arrested, the NCW chief said, “We get so many rape complaints each week that it is not feasible for us to send an inspector every time. So far, we have seen that be it the general police or the ‘mahila’ police of UP, they are apathetic towards victims who are harassed and have to run from pillar to post for justice.”
Sharma added that in the case of the Badaun rapes, officers called for discussions seldom made an appearance. “Recently, we asked a senior officer to come and meet us, but he sent another officer in his place. Can we do investigations in this manner?” she said.
She also said the central government should show more concern about the state of women in UP. “The central government has to stress on more action there,” she said.
