David Ortiz shot and hospitalized in the Dominican Republic

Boston Red Sox legend David Ortiz was shot and hospitalized on Sunday in the Dominican Republic, according to his father (via ESPN’s Enrique Rojas).

There are several outlets reporting on the story, but the details are currently vague. Hoy’s Dionisio Soldevila reports that Ortiz was shot during a burglary attempt, for example.

Ortiz, 43, was a 10-time All-Star, World Series MVP, three-time World Series champion, and hit 541 home runs over 20 MLB seasons (14 with the Red Sox, six with the Minnesota Twins). He retired following the 2016 season.

We’ll update this story as more details become available.

UPDATE #1: David Ortiz reportedly suffered a gunshot wound to the back that went through his abdomen, and told the doctor, “Please don’t let me die. I’m a good man.”

UPDATE #2: One of the doctors that took care of Ortiz told Dominican news network CDN 37 that Ortiz is currently in surgery, but out of danger.

UPDATE #3: Ortiz is out of surgery and doing well, according to his brother.
