Chiefs dominate Colts 31-13, will host AFC Championship Game

Knowing they would be in a fight with top seed Kansas City in a snowy Arrowhead Stadium, the Indianapolis Colts tried to pull out all the stops. But no matter how hard they tried, the Colts just couldn’t stop Patrick Mahomes as the MVP favorite threw for 278 yards in a 31-13 victory over the Colts.

The first half was “almost” all Kansas City. Their first offensive drive was a quick 90 yard march that looked a bit too easy, culminating in Damien Williams patiently letting the holes open up for him to get the opening touchdown.

A three and out gave the ball right back to the Chiefs and they went 70 yards for the score with Tyreek Hill running it in from 36 yards.

After a bunch of three and outs, the Colts just couldn’t get anything done on offense. Their only score in the first half was thanks to their special teams. Najee Goode blocked the punt and as the ball rolled into the end zone, Zach Pascal scored to make it a 17-7 game and temporarily stop the bleeding.

For the Colts, it was a bad time for Adam Vinatieri to have a bad game. The future Pro Football Hall of Famer who has multiple Super Bowl game winning field goals inexplicably hit the post and missed a 23 yard field goal going into halftime. It was the closest miss of Vinatieri’s career and it happened during a time where the Colts really needed the usually reliable kicker to get the points.

The second half was more of the same even though the Colts seemed to keep things level. Problem was that they needed to be better than the Chiefs because they were 17 points behind.

Near the end of the third quarter, Darius Leonard got the ball out of Sammy Watkins’ hands and recovered the fumble, giving the Colts a huge change to begin a comeback. It was short lived as Dee Ford forced a fumble on Andrew Luck and the Chiefs got the ball back.

The Colts didn’t give up and in fact, got a huge touchdown to T.Y. Hilton with over five minutes left. But when Vinatieri missed the extra point, it suddenly became a two touchdown game and that kinda sealed Indy’s fate.

The Chiefs answered with a similar touchdown drive and maintained their big lead throughout the end, winning 31-13 and advancing to the AFC Championship Game.

For Mahomes, while the stats doesn’t seem to back it up, he really kept plays alive and displayed the smooth moves that a veteran QB would display, Pressure? There was no pressure for the guy who was in his first playoff game. And now that they know they are hosting next week’s game, the Chargers and Patriots know they are in for a fight if they want to go to Atlanta.
