Dr Harsh Vardhan asks for report on Sunanda Pushkar’s death

New Delhi, 2 July-2014(ANI/IANS)): Union health minister Dr Harsh Vardhan has asked the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) to provide a detailed report on allegations raised by the head of forensics department at AIIMS Dr Sudhir Gupta, that he was forced to change the autopsy report of Shashi Tharoor’s wife Sunanda Pushkar, reports Hindustan Times.

Shashi Tharoor has refused to comment on the issue, according to ANI’s tweets. Meanwhile AAP leader and well-know lawyer Prashant Bhushan told ANI that the government should order inquiry again if what the doctor claims is true. Kiren Rijiju, MoS Home told ANI that he had not yet seen the report.

BJP leader Subramaniam Swamy however, has been predictably quick to react. He told ANI, “Sunanda Pushkar had said she would expose IPL deals, Vadra’s name would also have surfaced. I will file a petition.”
Times Now quoted lawyer and NCP leader Majid Memon as saying, “There should be an inquiry into the death of Sunanda Pushkar and Shashi Tharoor should co-operate.”

Earlier today report in the Times of India said that Dr Sudhir Gupta, the Forensic Head of AIIMS, wrote to the Ministry of Health and the Chief Vigilance Commission alleging he was being pressured to submit a report saying Pushkar died a “natural death”.

Gupta who was heading the team of forensic experts that conducted the postmortem, claimed he was pressured “by top officials”, and went on to name Shashi Tharoor and Ghulam Nabi Azad (Health Minister at the time) in this regard.
“Dr Gupta has claimed that he is now being targeted because he did not bow to the pressure and gave a report stating that Sunanda’s death was caused by drug poisoning that could be either suicidal or homicidal,” TOI reported.

According to a report by Zee News, Dr Gupta claimed he was prevented from telling the truth in his report due to Shashi Tharoor and Ghulam Nabi Azad’s influence. “In order to prove that autopsy report was influenced, Dr Gupta has also submitted details of emails exchanged between AIIMS director and Tharoor,” adds the report.
Former Union minister Shashi Tharoor’s wife Pushkar was found dead in a hotel room on 17 January this year. Tharoor discovered her body after he returned from the All India Congress committee meeting at 8 pm.

In the days leading up to her death, Pushkar was engaged in a verbal spat on Twitter with Pakistani journalist Mehr Tarar who she suspected was having an affair with Tharoor.
However, both Tharoor and Tarar denied these allegations to reporters.
