At least 35 railway staffers were rescued from a fire which engulfed the fifth floor of the Central Railway administrative building next to the CST here Friday evening.
The building is exactly next to the platform no. 1 of CST railway station. The trains of platform no 1 have been diverted to platform no 2 of Harbour line of Central Railway.

The administrative building – connected and adjacent to the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST) world heritage building – houses several important Central Railway deparments, including commercial and construction. “We got a call at about 5 pm and we immediately pressed four fire tenders into service. Thereafter, the fire was upgraded one notch to Grade 2 and a total of eight fire tenders, snorkels and ambulances have now been rushed to the spot,” a Fire Brigade official said. No report of casualties has been reported yet. However, the fire has caused a lot of traffic chaos in south Mumbai. Vehicular traffic on the JJ flyover has been halted temporarily and services of few trains in the Suburban Line have also been affected, they said. Traffic is diverted to Mahanagarpalika Marg to reach Byculla. The cause of the blaze has not been ascertained yet and efforts are on to evacuate the officials working in the building, the official added.
