Eagles fear Carson Wentz is done for the season with a torn ACL

The Philadelphia Eagles just came away with an impressive 43-35 road victory over the Los Angeles Rams, and are now an NFL-best 11-2. However, it appears they may have just lost their most important player, who was potentially set to be the league’s MVP.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter and NFL.Com’s Ian Rapoport report that the Eagles fear quarterback Carson Wentz is done for the season with a torn ACL.

The injury appeared to take place late in the third quarter, when Wentz took a couple brutal hits while diving into the end zone for a touchdown that was negated by a holding penalty. He would stay in and throw a fourth-down touchdown pass (which now seems pretty stunning if he had a torn ACL), but was ruled out for the remainder of the game before getting another snap.

Needless to say, this would be a devastating blow to Philadelphia’s championship chances, and just a really crappy way to end what has been a remarkable second season in the NFL from Wentz. The North Dakota State product threw four touchdown passes in this game, to give him an Eagles franchise record 33 touchdown passes on the season, and with just six interceptions.

Former Eagles starter Nick Foles relieved Wentz and completed 6-of-10 passes for 42 yards. Foles had a terrific 2013 season with the Eagles (27 touchdowns, two interceptions, 119.2 passer rating), but has mostly struggled since then. The 28-year-old played 11 games with the Rams in 2015, with seven touchdown passes, 10 interceptions, and a 69.0  passer rating. Foles should be able to run the offense fine and the terrific supporting cast will help, but it will be difficult for the offense to perform like the juggernaut unit they have been with Wentz.

The Eagles clinched the NFC East with Sunday’s victory, have a two-game lead for a playoff bye (and a one-game lead for the NFC’s No. 1 seed), and finish the season with games against the Giants, Raiders, and Cowboys. But it’s obviously going to be much more difficult to beat teams deep into the playoffs without Wentz, and the NFC really seems wide open at this point.
