BMC to issue identity cards to roadside vendors

Bhubaneswar, 30 May-2014: Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) Mayor Ananta Narayan Jena on Thursday informed that the civic body would soon undertake a survey of roadside vendors and issue identity cards for their convenience.

Jena, who was speaking at a national conference of roadside vendors wherein nearly 60 representatives of roadside vendors’ associations from 18 States participated, said that following the issuance of identity cards the roadside vendors would be rehabilitated in suitable locations.The participants discussed various issues like the benefits of Street Vendors Act-2014 and merits of vending zone.

The All Orissa Roadside Vendors’ Association (AORVA) discussed their12-point charter of demands and urged the Bhubaneswar (Central) MLA Bijay Mohanty and BMC Mayor Jena to consider their demands at the earliest.The demands included setting up of vending zone committees in every city in the State, stopping of eviction, issue of identity cards to all roadside vendors, provision of ESI, inclusion under the BPL category and Rajiv Awas Yojana and free teaching to the children of the vendors.AORVA president Pratap Sahoo, Odisha Khadi and Gramdyog Board Chairman Tejeswar Parida also participated in the conference.
