Suri, January 27, Rimo Bose: Police protections have finally been given to the rape victim’s family. Failing to pay the indemnity of Rs 50,000 for being in love with a man of diverse community led to the rape of a 20 year old girl. This incident took place few days back at Labhpur of Birbhum district of the West Bengal.
Birbhum Incident and Ancient belief of Kangaroo Court
The rape of the 20 year old girl was administered by the kangaroo court as she failed to pay the fine for breaking the tribal rules and having an affair with a man of another community. The case comes out as an example of the heinous atrocity that exists in the country in the name of age old tradition. The case came into light following the police complaint lodged by the victim. It was reported that this rape was finalized by the morol head of the tribal group, selected from the oldest family of the village. This order led to the movement of the villagers in the girls’s house resulting into her rape. The 13 accused people are now under the police custody. The police have been keeping an eye on the villagers so as to prevent fiddling with the evident.
Although the crime of rape has been witnessed almost every day but surprisingly this case highlights the tinge of envy with the corresponding development in the community. The villagers claimed this act to be an incident out of agony which has led to the deliberation of the act. One of the villagers said “we tried to catch as well as the constructor for whom she worked”. The victim was employed in Delhi as a craftsperson or helper for the mason has developed a relationship with him, which has been held as the prime reason for her being raped.
The difference in the life of the girl for earning more than the local labors can be taken as matter of envy. It was said by the locals that panchayat gave the verdict and it was held as final. This kind of similar incident took place 4 years back. Now the mason and his brother is kept under house arrest for further investigation. It has been reported that the police in continuing its probe into the matter.
