“Dinesh Thakur, a native of Mohda village, was arrested on Friday night for killing of the spotted deer, including two male, two female and a fawn, near Mohda resort under Balodabazar Forest Division,” Additional Managing Director, Forest Development Corporation, AK Dwivedi told PTI.

Thakur was booked under the provisions of Wildlife Conservation Act 1972 and Indian Forest Act 1927, he added.

“However, we are probing every angle and interrogation of the arrested accused will felicitate the arrest of more persons in this case,” he said.

The incident came to light on May 22 evening, when some locals spotted the carcasses of the Cheetals near a pond outside the village, located around 90 kms away from the state capital, following which they informed forest officials.

The postmortem report of the deer has confirmed that they died after drinking water mixed with urea, Dwivedi said.

The preliminary investigation revealed that some people were involved in the illegal trade of deer skin in the area and urea was mixed by them into the water with an intention of poaching, he said.

Acting on the inputs, Thakur was arrested later.

He was produced in a local court of Balodabazar district on Saturday which sent him to jail, he said.
