RJD’s decision comes after the Bharatiya Janata Party-led by Narendra Mlodi registered an emphatic win in the General Elections. The party won 22 seats out of the total 40 in Bihar. The ruling JD(U) led by Nitish Kumar managed to bag only 2 seats, while RJD won 4 parliamentary seats.

Dismayed by the poor performance of his party in the recently held polls, Nitish resigned as Bihar CM and a close aide of his Jitan Ram Manjhi, a ‘Mahadalit’ leader, was on Tuesday sworn-in as the 23rd chief minister of Bihar.

The 68-year-old JD(U) MLA was administered the oath of office by Governor DY Patil at a function at the Rajbhawan here. He also directed the new government of Bihar to seek a trust vote on the floor of the House on May 23.

The effective strength of the House at present is 239. JD(U) has 117 members, BJP 90, RJD 21, Congress 4 and others including Independents 1, CPI member 7.
