Guwahati, February 24, Priyanka Bhowmick: Pranab Boro, farmer activist of Krisak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) self-immolates in a protest demanding land rights for local people in various regions of eastern Assam state, in front of the Assam Secretariat in Guwahati, today.

Police extinguished the flames and Boro was hospitalised with burns over 90 percent of his body.

The KMSS knocked on the road to interrupt the land patta distribution programme of the state govt. at Kalashetra today.

“Road blockades are going on at some places in Golaghat and Sivasagar and rail blockade in Jorhat. We are taking action and clearing the blockades now.” said A.P. Rout, Additional DGP (Law and Order) to PTI.

Peasant’s leader, Akhil Gogoi is shocked with the incident and blames Assam CM, Tarun Gogoi for the occurrence.

Assam Health Minister, Himanta Biswa Sharma announced that Boro’s treatment will be borne by the state.
