JSPL To Start Sponge Iron Production At Angul By 15th May
After meeting with chief secretary J K Mohapatra, the chairman said that Coal gasification has already been started at the project site. He said that coal will be gasified for the first time in the world and the synthesis gas will be used for making sponge iron on the DRI (Direct Reduced Iron) route. He said that the plant is expected to be commissioned by 15th May.
A unique feature of DRI plant is that it uses Syn Gas as reductant obtained from the coal gasification plants. This DRI-gasification route is being used for the first time in the world with the advantage of using high ash coal which is predominantly available within the vicinity of the project site. The company claimed this in its official website.
An agreement has been signed between JSPL and Lurgi Technology Company based in South Africa to avail the technology for coal gasification.
The website also said that the coal gasification technology offers a practical means of utilizing indigenous coal for meeting stringent environmental control requirements.
The Utkal B 1 coal block has been allotted to JSPL with an estimated reserve of 228 MT.
