Chennai , 26 Jan : A boat carrying over 46 people on board capsizes near between Ross Island and North Bay. As per deputy commissioner of Nicobar ,P Johar the boat which carrying tourists from Kanchi Puram district of Tamil Nadu and Mumbai and crew members sank on its way from Ross Island to North Bay.
21 people dead as boat turtle near Andaman
The boat was called Aqua Marine which was reportedly carrying mainly tourists sank at around 4 pm. Sources have told the Press Trust of India that the boat had the capacity to carry only 25 passengers, and was overcrowded which led to the accident.
While 23 people have been rescued, two passengers are still missing, according to officials. Lt Governor Lt Gen (Retd) A K Singh of Andaman announced an ex-gratia of Rs one lakh to the family of the deceased. He also spoke to Union Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde and apprised him on the rescue operation he ordered after the accident. The rescued persons were admitted to the G B Pant Hospital in Port Blair. The bodies were also taken there for postmortem, as per officials.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh expressed great shock over the boat tragedy ,a PMO statement said in New Delhi.
