Chhatarpur cop demands bribe for bail, audio goes viral

HT Correspondent, Bhopal: Chhatarpur police has ordered a probe after an assistant sub-inspector was heard in

an audio clip threatening to thrash and publicly humiliate an accused if he fails to present himself before the police.
In the 3.40-minute viral audio clip, the assistant sub-inspector at Lavkush Nagar police station, Ranveer Singh Chauhan, is also heard demanding bribe from Sushil Mishra, who faces a case for his alleged involvement in a family dispute.
“Subah aa jana thane me, jamanat tatkal ho jayegi 2 minute me (You come to the police station in the morning. You will get bail within two minutes),” Chauhan is heard saying to Mishra.
The policeman also tells Mishra to not approach any politician or else he will be declared absconding and will not get bail in the case.
“Agar mil gaye to pandit ho beizzati bhi karenge. Maarte huye layenge aur aisi likhapadi kar denge ki jail chale jaoge (If I find you, then I would humiliate you as you are a Brahmin. I would bring you to the police station by beating you and put such charges that you would land up in jail),” Chauhan purportedly tells Mishra.
The policeman, later in the audio clip, is heard telling Mishra he doesn’t want any money but should present himself before the police and co-operate with them in the case.
Chhatarpur superintendent of police Lalit Shakyawar said the ASI had been sent to lines after the audio clip came into light.
“I have also ordered an inquiry into the whole incident which would be headed by sub-divisional officer of police to send a message that the working of the police is transparent,” said Shakyawar.
