New Delhi: In a move widely expected, Vijay Mallya on Monday resigned from his position in the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of the Parliament of India.
Earlier, on April 26, Rajya Sabha’s Ethics Committee had recommended the expulsion of the liquor baron after it found that he has not declared changes in his assets and liabilities for 10 years.
Mallya currently is in a controversy over his default of almost Rs 9,000 crore of loans to Indian banks. He gave the authorities a slip a few weeks ago and fled from India to United Kingdom.
His passport was later revoked in the hope of him being deported by the UK for trials in India. Mallya had then disclosed that he has been a UK passport holder since 1992.
