ASP as Trinamool Cong. candidate raises eyebrows

Alipurduar: “There is lot of poverty in the region. I want to bring smiles to the people of tea gardens,” a police officer of the rank of Additional Superintendent of Police told journalists in his office, just hours after he was announced as the Trinamool Congress’ candidate for the upcoming Assembly polls.

James Kujur, ASP of Jalpaiguri is the TMC candidate from Kumargram Assembly segment in the recently set up Alipurduar district of the State. He is the only serving police officer to be nominated by the ruling party.

Model Code violation
“I was contemplating about it [contesting elections] for long. Soon I will quit the job and go to the people,” the police officer who will be contesting for the seat reserved for Scheduled Tribe category, said.

Raising strong objections over the TMC’s candidate giving an interview from a government office, the Left Front has formally lodged a complaint with the State’s Chief Electoral Officer — one of the first formal complaints of Model Code violation in West Bengal. Disrict Magistrate of Jalpaiguri Pritha Sarkar said she would have to look into the entire footage of the interview before commenting on the issue. However, Ms. Sarkar added that as a candidate, it was Mr. Kujur’s personal responsibility to follow the rules.
