Kashmir leaders condemn action against JNU students

JAMMU: Separatist leaders in the Valley on Friday reacted sharply to the police action on Jawaharlal Nehru University students and a Press Club of India event on the death anniversaries of the Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru and JKLF founder Maqbool Bhat.

Demanding the immediate release of JNU Students’ Union president Kanhaiya Kumar, Hurriyat faction chairman Syed Ali Shah Geelani said, “Registration of sedition charges against the students is totally against the democratic claims of India and against the freedom of expression, and it has no constitutional and legal justification.”

Another senior separatist, Shabir Shah, who heads the Democratic Freedom Party (DFP), termed the police action against the students “barbaric” and “unconstitutional.”
