Nine defecting Assam MLAs disqualified those recently joined BJP

Guwahati: Nine MLAs were disqualified today from the Assam Legislative Assembly under the anti-defection law for anti-party activities.

The disqualified MLAs are Bolin Chetia, Pradan Barua, Pallab Lochan Das, Rajen Borthakur, Pijush Hazarika, Kripanath Mallah, Abu Taher Bepari, Binanda Saikia and Jayanta Mallah Barua.

Speaker Pranab Gogoi passed the verdict in his court in the presence of nine MLAs against whom the ruling party had initiated proceedings for termination of their membership for anti-party activities.

  1. Chief Whip of the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) in the State Assembly, Nilamani Sen Deka today submitted a petition to the Speaker of the State Assembly, Pranab Gogoi, urging for disqualification of the nine former Congress legislators, who recently joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
    Deka told this newspaper today evening that by joining the BJP, the nine legislators – Abu Taher Bepari, Jayanta Malla Barua, Binanda Saikia, Rajen Barthakur, Pallab Lochan Das, Pradan Barua, Piyus Hazarika, Bolin Chetia and Kripanath Mallah – have attracted provision 2 (a) of the 10th Schedule of the Indian Constitution.

    They have attracted the provisions of the Anti-defection Law as the 10th schedule of the Indian Constitution is popularly known. Because, they were elected on Congress tickets; but now they have ‘voluntarily given up their membership of the party’ and joined the BJP on November 6 last.

  2. Its official. In a historical move, Assam Assembly Speaker Pranab Gogoi has disqualified nine Congress legislators who joined BJP a couple of months back under the anti defection law. The decision was formally announced from the Assam Assembly two days after after conducting the hearing.

    The disqualified Congress legislators are Pradan Baruah, Jayanta Malla Baruah, Piyush Hazarika, Rajen Barthakur, Pallab Luchon Das, Balin Chetia, Kripa Nath Malla, Abu Taher Bepari and Binanda Saikia.

    The Speaker finalised on Saturday conducted the hearing acting the allegation raised by the Congress that the nine MLAs joined BJP without formally putting their papers before the authority.

    Then the Speaker allowed the nine legislators to clear their position. Lawyer Debojit Saikia appeared before the Speaker on behalf of the defected MLAs.

    All the nine Congress legislators have been doing dissidence against Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi for the last three years. Even after joining the BJP they did not formally resign saying that the party suspended them.
