India v/s South Africa 1st Test: Pujara, Kohli out in quick succession

Welcome to the LIVE Updates of the 1st Test between India v/s South Africa. The match takes place in Mohali and begins at 9:30 am.

India have won the toss and chosen to bat. They have left out Bhuvneshwar, Rohit, KL Rahul and Stuart Binny. Ishant Sharma is serving a one-match ban. Kohli says he ‘misses out obviously’.

Hashim Amla says he would have batted first too. Bavuma and Piedt are missing out, and Morne and JP Duminy are injured. So Rabada makes his debut. Will he wreak havoc in the Tests too?

11:33 AM

India have finished on 82/3 at lunch. Naturally, SA will be the happier team, capturing 3 Indian wickets on the first day of a Test match in India before lunch. Dhawan played a poor shot, Pujara also, and Kohli looks a bit out of his depth right now.

Murali Vijay is batting stoically on 40 and the irresistible Ajinkya Rahane, ever the fighter, has just joined him. Hope things go better for the home team in the 2nd session.

11:15 AM

OUT! Virat Kohli is gone now, for just one. He drives a ball from Rabada straight to short extra cover. Out for 1. India in doldrums. 65/3. Rabada’s first Test wicket. What a big one.

11:09 AM

OUT! Cheteshwar Pujara is gone after getting a start. Dean Elgar flighted it nicely on the off stump from around the wicket, the ball didn’t turn and Pujara expected it to. Hit plumb in front of middle. Out for 31.

10:15 AM

India have reached 24/1 after the early loss of Dhawan. Both Murali Vijay and CK Pujara are now taking it cautiously. While Vijay has made 11, Pujara has made 13. 10 overs are up.

09:29 AM

OUT! Shikhar Dhawan is gone without scoring, and his poor form has continued into the Test series. Had a flash at one just outside off, no foot  movement, and caught behind. India 0/1.
