Gohana Dalit murder: Two Haryana policemen alleged in the case suspended

Chandigarh(PTI): Two policemen who are alleged accused in the Dalit teenager Govinds’s murder in Gohana, Haryana have been suspended. Probe in the case will continue.

Postmortem findings suggest injury marks were 7-8 days old. Although no FIR was filed in the bird-theft case and the settlement happened out of police station.

Govinda’s brother claimed that the 15-year old was brutally beaten in custody and had prominent cuts across his body. He also claimed that the arms and legs of the dead boy had been fractured.​

“Two cops of Gohana police station, assistant sub-inspectors Subhash and Ashok demanded money from us,” he added.

“The police demanded five thousand rupees from us, and when we were ready to give them that amount, they demanded ten thousand rupees. Yesterday, I went to police station to give him (Govinda) food. The police officials told me that my son had run away from the police station and the next day, we found his dead body,” said Govinda’s mother.

On the death of the Dalit boy, Haryana CM Manohar Lal Khattar said that two families had a dispute over some money. “As per information, two families Gadia Lohar and Dhanik had some dispute over the issue of some money and pigeon. There was a dispute of Rs 6,000. Their matter was resolved in police station where two persons mutually decided to equally contribute the money. However, one family gave its share and other has not given,” he said.

Khattar said that the minor Dalit boy was not questioned by the police. “There was no questioning (of minor boy). He himself went to the police station. One family went with the complaint where matter was resolved. After the matter was resolved, they went to their house and during night suicide took place, as per unofficial information,” he said.

Govinda’s body was found hanging near his house in Gohana’s Govindpura area on Thursday. The family claimed that he was charged with stealing a pigeon and then was brutally beaten up during police custody.

The relatives have reportedly placed his body on the road to mark protest, demanding action against the culprits and Rs 10 lakh compensation.Local residents blocked a road and the local railway track for more than three hours, disrupting the rail and road transport services in the area.
