Noida: A 50-year-old resident was allegedly beaten to death by a mob, near Delhi, on Monday night over rumours that his family had eaten beef.
According to report, villagers in Dadri in Uttar Pradesh dragged Mohammad Akhlaq and his son Danish and beat them with bricks. Akhlaq, a farm worker, succumbed to injuries. His son is in hospital in critical condition.
A case of rioting and murder has been registered against 10 people, while six people have been arrested.
The police have sent the meat for forensic testing and are investigating the matter to find out who spread the rumour.
However, Akhlaq’s family said that they only had mutton in their fridge and not the meat.
Quoting Gautam Budh Nagar District Magistrate NP Singh, the report said that police have been deployed in the area and “as of now, the situation is under control”.
