Assam State BJP is divided over the move to welcome Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma a few months ahead of the assembly polls. But the central leadership will take the final call.

State president Siddharth Bhattacharya and his close associates want the former Congress minister saying that he would help the party ensuring the victory of at least 5 seats.

“We want Dr Sarma like workaholic political leader. He was one who made no less contribution for three consecutive victories,” said one of the close associates of Bhattacharya.

A circle of MPs have been dead opposed to the idea of importing Dr Sarma. They include an union minister from the north east along with four other MPs.

“The man who is unwanted in his own party should not be allowed in our party. It would lower the image of our party just a few months ahead of the polls. It would be a suicidal act,” said a party leader.

“State leadership has been urging the central leadership to consider Himanta’s case. But some others have not given any positive feedback to the central leadership. But the central leadership is still indecisive,” said a central leader in New Delhi.

  3. In what might affect the ruling Congress in Assam ahead of next year’s assembly polls, former state health and education minister Himanta Biswa Sarma today met BJP president Amit Shah in New Delhi, and said he would be joining the party soon.

“I along with Assam BJP president Siddhartha Bhattacharya met BJP national president Amit Shah. We discussed a host of issues including the present political situation, floods etc. (in Assam),” Mr Sarma told media persons outside Mr Shah’s residence in New Delhi today evening.

“I expressed my willingness to work under the strong leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and national president Amit Shah and they have accepted it.”

He also posted a note on his Facebook account: “Following massive calls over the past months from people across Assam hailing from all communities, will be formally joining the BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) for A Resurgent Assam and Northeast under the vibrant leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modiji.

“Urging all of you here to join hands for a Resurgent Assam and Northeast,” Mr Sarma posted.

Mr Sarma, who has been representing the Jalukbari assembly constituency since 2001, was an important leader of the Congress in the state and played a vital role in bringing the party to power in Assam in the last three consecutive elections.

He had since 2011 been expressing dissent and demanding a change in the state leadership. He resigned from the Tarun Gogoi cabinet in 2014.
