Sonia Gandhi was forced to enter Lok Sabha Well today for the first time

An agitated Congress president Sonia Gandhi entered the Well of the Lok Sabha on Wednesday after a BJP parliamentarian made an outrageous remark on her sister during an acrimonious Lalitgate debate.

As he made his opening statement, Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge included Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje along with External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj in his attack on the government. That rattled the BJP MPs, with Dushyant Singh getting up and shouting, “Rahul ki mausi ke paas kitna black money hai? (How much black money has Rahul Gandhi’s aunt got?)”

As soon as the remark was made, outraged Congress MPs were on their feet, demanding the remarks be withdrawn immediately and rushed to the Well. In an unprecedented protest, Sonia led that charge, leading to the adjournment of the House by Speaker Sumitra Mahajan.

Speaking to Aaj Tak later, Dushyant was defiant and unapologetic. “I have been named by the opposition in Lok Sabha. I am ready to give a statement. If they don’t allow me, I will give a written statement,” he said.
After a 16-day deadlock, the Lok Sabha was debating the Lalit Modi controversy after the Speaker allowed the Congress’s adjournment motion over it.
