Prime Minister Narendra Modi today had a meeting with his visiting Bangladesh counterpart Sheikh Hasina…
Mumbai(Indilens web team): An irked Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday, took strong exception to Mumbai Mayor Snehal Ambekar’s comment on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, comparing his rule to that of German dictator Adolf Hitler.
“This is shocking…one should know one’s limit. There are lakhs and thousands of volunteers and leaders in BJP, but never has anyone uttered a single word against Shiv Sena’s Bal Thackeray. We will not accept this. How can she make such a statement?” Gopal Shetty, Member of Parliament (MP) from Mumbai North said. He further castigated Ambekar for time and again making controversial statements, straining political ties.
Voicing a similar sentiment, BJP Group Leader in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Manoj Kotak said, “This is highly unacceptable. How can the Mayor speak of and compare Modiji to Hitler. We demand an apology.”
In an interview to a city-based tabloid, BJP corporators also demanded an inquiry into the statement made by Ambekar .
“A Mayor is the first citizen of a city and must be unbiased and remain apolitical in her action and statement. Ambekar must take back what she spoke about Modiji,” Deputy Mayor Alka Kerkar said.
Ambekar had compared Modi to Hitler in an interview by saying – “I feel his rule is quite Hitler-shaahi. This is bound to happen when power is concentrated in the hands of one man.” However, she later claimed that she had been misquoted. Despite several attempts, the Mayor remained unavailable to comment on the BJP’s demand for an apology.
The incident is one of the many episodes involving sharp exchanges between the two allies, bringing to the fore the friction between them which started when the BJP snapped ties with the Uddhav Thackeray-led Sena, days before the Maharashtra Assembly polls, last year over a seat sharing dispute.
