MUMBAI: Actor-turned-politician Hema Malini has provoked fresh outrage with tweets blaming the father of the child who was killed in an accident last week in Rajasthan involving her Mercedes car.
Last Thursday, the BJP parliamentarian’s speeding Mercedes crashed into a Maruti Alto in which Harsh Khandelwal was travelling with his family.
Mr Khandelwal’s two-year-old daughter Chinni was killed and his six-year-old son suffered fractures in both arms and both legs.
Hema Malini’s driver was arrested and booked for rash driving and culpable homicide. He is out on bail.
Mr Khandelwal said he was taking a turn on the highway when the Mercedes came at high speed from the other side and banged into him. “My child could have been saved if she had been attended to in time,” he told NDTV.
The child’s family has alleged that Hema Malini left the site of the accident in Dausa without reaching out to them. Witnesses at the site of the accident in Dausa said the 66-year-old politician, who was injured on the forehead, was driven away to Jaipur soon after the car crash in a private vehicle by a local BJP leader.
A day after the accident, Hema Malini issued a statement expressing sorrow over the child’s death.
Amid angry posts on social media, her daughter Esha Deol said that Ms Malini would provide financial aid to the victims, “not because she is a politician but because she is a good human being.”
