Vizhinjam port: Notice to State and Central Government

Kochi, 14 March, Sreeparvathy K.: National Green Tribunal gave notice to Central and State Governments on the petition against Vizhinjam port project. In addition to this, Green Tribunal also sought explanation from Pollution Control Board and Vizhinjam Seaport Authority. The case will be considered by Green Tribunal on March 25.

Three residents from Poonthura had approached Green Tribunal Chennai Bench to stay the environmental clearance given to the project. The petition stated that the project will harmfully affect the life of fishermen folk in the area.

The petitioners alleged that project was given environmental clearance due to political pressure and Ministry of Environment and Forest gave the permission without detailed study on the project. The petition also points out that the project will lead to serious environmental problems.

Ministry of Environment and Forests granted permission to the project onJanuary 3. The tender notification procedures were done and five consortia had replied to the Requests for Qualification (RFQ).
