Srinagar,14 March-2014(GNS): A teenage boy was killed while two others received injuries during protests against government forces in North Kashmir’s Bandepur district on Friday.
Scores of youth took to streets after Friday congregation and tried to take out a march but were stopped by forces deployed in the area. In reaction youth pelted stones at the personals of Indian Reserve Police (IRP) in Naidkhai area of the district.
In retaliation, the forces resorted to teargas shelling to disperse the protesters, reports added. There were conflicting reports about what led to protests. Witnesses said the protests had erupted over the arrest of youth after recent stone pelting incidents. But, sources in police said the people were protesting over the government’s failure to reach out to them during the heavy snowfall that the region received on Tuesday.
Later in the evening, the situation took an ugly turn when forces opened fire at Naidkhai Bazar resulting injuries to three persons. The injured were rushed to Pattan hospital where a youth identified as Farhat Dar, 18, succumbed to his injuries. The teen, who hails from Shah Gund in Sumbal, received a bullet in his heart, doctors at Pattan hospital said.

District’s Deputy Commissioner, Shah Faisal, has ordered an inquiry into the killing. He said: “In the evening, at 6:30 pm , a mob tried to set ablaze police vehicle in retaliation police opened fire in which a youth got killed – this is what police told me.”
“I appeal people to maintain peace and calm in the region as the probe has been already ordered,” he said, adding: whoever is found guilty will not be spared.
As the news about the killing of a local youth spread in the area, hundreds of people including men, women and children took to streets and staged massive anti-India protests.
Massive protests have also erupted in bordering Palhallan in Varmul district, witnesses told Kashmir Dispatch.
A police statement here said: “Today in evening hours an unruly mob in Naidkhai Sumbal attacked a security personnel vehicle and tried to set it ablaze. Security personnel boarding in the vehicle fired in air to disperse the mob in which one person got injured…who unfortunately died on way to the hospital.”
