New Delhi(WEB TEAM): Gujarat cadre IPS officer of 1987 batch Arun Kumar Sharma, has been appointed as Joint Director, Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), New Delhi for a period of five years. Sharma is currently heading Ahmedabad Detection of Crime Branch (DCB) as special commissioner a post created for the first time.
Ending speculations over Sharma’s appointment the Department of Personnel and Training, New Delhi issued the order of his appointment as joint director “for an initial period of five years in CBI.” The CBI in Gujarat has probed Sohrabuddin Sheikh, his wife Kauser Bi, their aide Tulsiram Prajapati and Ishrat Jahan encounter cases. The fake encounter of Sadiq Jamal Mehtar is still under investigation.
The central government has also extended the term of another Gujarat cadre officer Keshav Kumar for a year who is also posted as Joint Director. There is no news in case of Surat police commissioner Rakesh Asthaana who had also sought central deputation in CBI.
During the investigation of Ishrat Jahan encounter Sharma’s name had cropped up in a CD where he was allegedly present in a purported meeting along with other officers for “derailing the investigation.” Sharma also featured in an alleged snooping controversy on a young woman architect reportedly “under watch” by the then officers including IPS officer GL Singhal, a key accused in Ishrat Jahan encounter, and the then minister of state for home Amit Shah, for one “Saheb”.
The Gujarat High Court ordered to quash the commission set up to probe the alleged snooping.
