NEW DELHI(PTI): Indian mountaineer Malli Mastan Babu, who went missing in South America’s Andes since March 24 has been found dead. Malli Mastan Babu, an accomplished mountaineer from Andhra Pradesh, had gone missing while on an expedition in Chile.
“Mountains retained its favourite child.. R.I.P Malli Mastan Babu.” read the announcement on Facebook page ‘Rescue Malli Mastan Babu’, created by his well-wishers to raise funds.
As per reports, Babu (40), a native of Nellore in Andhra Pradesh, was on a solo expedition to climb the mountain range along the Argentina-Chile border from the base camp of Cerro Tres Cruces.The expedition began on March 24 and he was scheduled to return to the base camp on March 25 and was set to return to India on March 28.
The rescue operations in the treacherous terrain cost a fortune but Babu’s friends from all around the world contributed generously in hope that he pulls through eventually.
In 2006, Babu had famously scaled seven summits of the world in 172 days. Besides being a 2000-2002 IIM pass out, he also has a degree from IIT Kharagpur. He reportedly holds a record for being the fastest ‘seven summit’ climber from India.
