New Delhi,31 Jan (TNN): Music director and singer Bappi Lahiri on Friday joined the Bharatiya Janata Party ahead of Lok Sabha elections. Lahiri met BJP President Rajnath Singh in the evening at Delhi headquarters. Kolkata born Bappi Lahiri has been living in Mumbai for over 40 years. It is not yet clear whether he will contest from Mumbai or Kolkata or he will just campaign for the party across India.
The BJP sources are indicating that the party plans to keep inducting many popular names in the next two months. In 2004, the ruling BJP had inducted dozens of film stars and other personalities from the entertainment industry into the party just ahead of the Lok Sabha elections. But the party suffered a shocking defeat and lost power at the Centre. Stars failed to ensure another victory for the party. The 62-year-old Lahiri, born to musician parents in Kolkata, moved to Mumbai when he was 19 and has had a long and successful career as a music composer and singer in the Mumbai film industry. He is best known for his foot-tapping numbers for Mithun Chakravarty, who earned fame as a “disco dancer” in the 1980s.
With Mithun set to enter Rajya Sabha on a Trinamool Congress ticket, it will be an interesting chapter in the lives of both film celebrities who seem to be starting their political careers at the same time. Lahiri’s joining BJP will be in line with the trend started by late party leader Pramod Mahajan, who had brought in quite a few film celebrities to the party for the 2004 Lok Sabha polls. According to a party source, BJP plans to keep inducting popular names into the party in the run-up to the 2014 Lok Sabha elections.
