BJP suffers losses in cantonment boards polls in UP

NEW DELHI,Binay Singh & Arunav Sinha(TNN): In a setback for BJP in Uttar Pradesh, none of the candidates supported by the party in Lucknow Cantonment Board polls could win in elections.

The BJP for the first time had fielded its candidates and also declared its list of official candidates.

In Lucknow Cantonment Board, considered to be strong hold of Union home minister Rajnath Singh, BJP lost on all eight seats.

Similarly, BJP candidates were defeated on all 7 seats in Varanasi Cantonment Board elections. The loss in Varanasi Cantonment Board polls is significant because the city is the Lok Sabha constituency of PM Narendra Modi.

However, in Agra Cantonment Board, BJP won only one out of eight seats, and two out of seven in neighbouring Mathura in the elections. BJP MP and union minister of state Ram Shankar Katheria campaigned for party candidates in a bid to ensure a big victory. Independents won seven seats in Agra, with PankajMahendru scoring a hat trick. The lone woman winner was SeemaRajput, also an Independent.
