Three Detained For Damaging Mahatma Gandhi Statue

Odisha, January 31, Abhijit Saha: Odisha Police on Thursday detained three persons for allegedly destroying a half-bust marble statue of Mahatma Gandhi here in front of the rural works department office in Ichhapur village of Kendrapara.

The three persons are identified and their names are Lituna Behera aged about 27 years, Niranjan Sahoo aged around 27 years and Rashi Ranjan Das aged around 25 years. All of them are from Ichhapur village of Kendrapara. The Superintendent of Police of Kendrapara Mr. Rabi Narayan Behera said that all the three persons was drunk  when they were destroying the statue of Mahatma Gandhi last midnight on the day when the nation paid homage to the Father of the Nation on his 66th death anniversary.

Gandhiji had spent a night at Ichhapur back in 1934 where he had organized a meeting also. This marble statue was built in the year 1978 in memory of that.

The three culprits were produced in the Kendrapara SDJM Court on Thursday and sent to jail custody said by Mr. Behera.  The Superintendent of Police of Kendrapara also said that the court rejected their bails and remanded them in custody of jail.

Angry public from neighbouring areas led by Purshottam Nayak, president of freedom fighters association, Amarbar Biswal and Biswanath Behera leaders of Aam Aadmi Party staged a dharna blocking a road demanding immediate actions to be taken against the culprits and arrest of them.

They were alleged under IPC Sections 294, 506, 34 and section 3 of the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act.
