Shillong, January 31, R M Warjri: The brother of Baghmara’s MLA Shri Samuel M Sangma is believed to have been abducted by suspected Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) rebels in South Garo Hills area, bordering Bangladesh, police said on friday. There has been no ransom call made so far.
Abraham Sangma, the district police official of South Garo Hills told IANS that, “Naga M Sangma, 39, the younger brother of Independent legislator Samuel M Sangma, was kidnapped by four suspected GNLA rebels about 7.30 p.m. (Thursday) night from his house at Gasuapara area.”
The MLA’s brother is suspected to have been abducted for ransom as he is a coal exporter to Bangladesh, police said. Mr. Samuel told IANS over phone that, he does not have any idea whether his brother has been served extortion notes by the rebel outfit, since there have been no ransom call received by his family so far.
In recent months the rebel outfit GNLA have served extortion notes demanding Rs. 5 Lakh to Rs. 1 Crore, to petrol pump owners, coal dealers and businessmen in the coal rich districts of Garo Hills.
Meanwhile, the state police along with central paramilitary force have launched a search operation to rescue Mr.Naga.
