Lucknow, 20 July-2014(ANI): Women congress workers staged a protest here on Sunday against rising crimes against women in Uttar Pradesh ahead of the recent gang rape and murder of a 35 year old woman in Mohanlalganj area of Lucknow.
The protest was led by All India Woman Congress chief Shobha Oza and Congress leader Rita Bahuguna Joshi.
The protest was staged beneath Mahatma Gandhi’s statue with party flags and anti Samajwady Party (SP) slogans as the women protesters demanded strict investigation in the Lucknow gang rape case and death penalty for the culprits.
“The protest is held to wake up the government as cases of rapes and murders are happening so frequently in Uttar Pradesh. What happened in Mohanlalganj, the police and the administration kept on sleeping, we strongly condemn it, the UP government needs to wake up and give security to women,” said Oza.
He also criticised SP chief over his anti rape comments and said that it’s his duty to provide safety to the residents of Uttar Pradesh.
“Congress leader Rita Bahuguna Joshi added, “Not only rape and murder but brutalization is happening in UP. Criminals are not scared any more. The police is not taking adequate measures. There are many cases still pending in the state. We will wait for 24 to 48 hrs and if we don’t find the investigation in Mohanlalganj rape case proper then we will take further step,” said Joshi.
