Kochi, 11 July-2014, J Binduraj/India Today: A 22-year-old deaf and dumb girl from Kochi is going to represent India in Miss World Deaf and Dumb contest to be held in Prague, Czech Republic on July 17. Sophia M Joe was the first runner-up in Miss India Deaf and Dumb competition held in Delhi.
She was chosen to represent India in the competition as the winner declined to participate in the contest.
Sophia, a BA second year student of English Language and Literature at St. Xavier’s college, Alwaye in Ernakulam district in Kerala is hopeful that she would bring laurels to India in the contest. “She is grown up like any other ordinary student. Though we home schooled her for some years, later we admitted her to an ordinary school in Kerala and trained her ourselves. We are always with her in fulfilling her ambitions and this infused much confidence in her,” said her mother Goriatty, a school teacher in Kochi.
Sophia had already shown her talent in the field of athletics, painting, modelling and fashion designing. She won several athletic competitions in state and national level held for deaf and dumb. She won first prize consecutively in Shot Put at state level for eight years and thrice at national level. She also walked the ramp in Kochi Fashion Week for designer Sanjana John last year. Sophia who undergoes training in dance has also ambitions to become a car racer in the future.
Sophia was detected to be deaf when she was ten months old. Her parents who didn’t lose hope seeing the birth deformity, trained her in everything she wished to be in. Her father Joe Francis is an officer with Hindustan Petroleum and mother a school teacher.
