Badaun gangrape case: CBI conducts polygraph test on victims' family

CBI sources said the fathers of the rape victims, a family member and a witness have been brought to undergo polygraph test at Central Forensic Science Laboratory in CGO complex here.

Protesting the move, the victims’ brother Virendra along with the members of Naya Daur Party sat on fast unto death here at Jantar Mantar alleging that CBI is harassing his family by subjecting his father to lie-detector test.

He said CBI is focusing on the victims rather than the accused.

The sources said they have taken three-days time from the court in Badaun to subject these four persons to polygraph or lie-detector test but if the procedure is completed earlier they may be allowed to go.

They said during the test which started today, the family members of the victims were repeatedly asked about the mobile phone of the girls and why it was broken.

The CBI sources said they are not doubting the claims made by the families of the victims but in order to develop a flawless case the agency needs to test the veracity of their statements.

The sources said the statements given by the family members have some inconsistencies which need to be clarified before proceeding in the case.

The two cousins, aged 14 and 15, went missing from their house on the night of May 27 and their bodies were found hanging from a mango tree in the village in Ushait area the next day.

The postmortem report of the two girls confirmed that they were raped before murder.

Director General of Uttar Pradesh Police A L Banerjee had also raised questions about the incident. He had claimed that rape of one of the victims was not confirmed while suggesting that property could be one of the motives behind the crime.

The lie-detector test, which is based on the premise that certain parameters of the body fluctuate when a person is lying, measures these parameters of the person undergoing the test and presents to the investigators a graph which shows variation when a particular question is asked.
