MUMBAI, 7 July-2014, TNN: A special court on Monday sentenced 24-year-old Sajjad Pathan to life imprisonment for the 2012 murder of lawyer Pallavi Purkayastha.
Prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam welcomed the judgment and said we will have to check the grounds for rejecting death.
Pallavi Purkayastha’s parents, who wanted nothing less than the death sentence, were unhappy with the punishment. “If this is not the rarest of the rare, what is? we will go to high court,” they said.
On August 9, 2012, Pallavi, a lawyer, was murdered in her rented flat in Wadala.
A security guard of the building Sajjad Ahmed Mughal alias Sajjad Pathan was held for the murder.
Pathan a native of Kashmir, was convicted under all charges including murder, outraging modesty of a woman and trespassing.
Judge Joshi adjourned the proceedings to Thursday when special public prosecutor Ujjawal Nikam and defence advocate Wahab Khan will present arguments on the quantum of sentence.(
Watchman Sajjad Ahmed Mughal entered Pallavi Purkayastha’s flat on August 9 with stolen keys and rape on his mind.
He tried to force himself on the lawyer while she was sleeping.
When Pallavi resisted with all her strength, the guard slashed her throat with a knife.
The 25-year-old daughter of senior Delhi-based bureaucrats died soon after.
Trial in the case had started in May last year.
