Bhubaneswar, 27 June-2014, Pravuprasad Routray: Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Friday launches Pink Auto service for women commuters in Bhubaneswar. About 200 drivers were found eligible to drive the special pink coloured three-wheeler with ‘Pink Auto’.
Launching the Pink Auto service, CM Patnaik said that, “I am delighted to be here today to launch the Pink Auto Project in Bhubaneswar city. I thank all those who have extended their support for the implementation of this project. This is another women friendly project after the women-only city bus project. It is a novel idea to provide secure alternative travelling to women in the city. In the face of increasing atrocities on women in the entire country in recent years, we have to explore all possible means to ensure a secure environment for women. Crime against women not only disturbs society but also has an adverse impact on the morale of women. I believe this Pink Auto Project will make travelling a safer experience for women.”
“I urge upon the police officers of the state to deal with all women related crimes in a firm and decisive manner. The Commissionerate police are specially mandated to ensure women safety and security and to address their grievances swiftly. I believe the security of women is an empowerment issue. Apartfrom the political, social and economic empowerment of women, the physical security of women is also a significant factor in our endeavour for women empowerment. Any threat to women safety and security will have an adverse impact on women empowerment. The State Government is uncompromising on its stand in protecting women and providing them with an atmosphere. Last year, we have provided self-defence training to four lakh girl students in various colleges of the state.
CM Patnaik further added that, “I congratulate the Auto-drivers who have come forward to participate in this project. I call upon every citizen of the city to support the endeavour to make Bhubaneswar a safe city for women.”
