Jalandhar, 28 Jan, Sandipan Sharma: After abundant rain on Indonesia’s main island of Java actuated two big landslides have killed at least 19 people and left ten others missing, A government official says.
Seasonal downpours cause frequent landslides and floods each year in Indonesia, a chain of 17,000 islands where millions of people live in mountainous areas or near productive flood plains near rivers.
According to National Disaster Mitigation Agency’s spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho Five houses were buried when mud rolled down from surrounding hills just after midnight in Mekarsari village of East Java’s Jombang district.
“Lack of equipment hampered our rescue efforts for those who are still missing and feared dead,” He also added.
Authorities scrambled to get tractors and bulldozers over washed-out roads. Television footage showed hundreds of police, soldiers and residents digging through debris with their hands, shovels.
Tuesday’s disaster was second disastrous landslide within several days on the thickly populated Java island.
Another landslide hit Central Java’s Kudus district late Friday, leaving at least 12 villagers dead.
