DEHRADUN, 19 June-2014, Kautilya Singh/TNN: Election Commission on Wednesday announced the schedule for the by-polls for the three assembly seats of Uttarakhand – Someshwar, Doiwala and Dharchula.
The notification for the by-polls will be issued on June 27, the process for nomination will end on July 4 and the scrutiny of documents will be completed by July 5, Chief Election Officer Radha Raturi said. July 7 has been reserved as the last day for withdrawal of forms.
The polling at the three assembly seats will be done on July 21 and counting of votes will be carried on July 25.
With the declaration of the by-poll schedule, the model code of conduct has been implemented in the three districts of Dehradun, Almora and Pithoragarh with the immediate effect.
Doiwala and Someshwar assembly seats were vacated by BJP leaders Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank and Ajay Tamta after they won Lok Sabha elections from Haridwar and Almora respectively.
Meanwhile, Congress leader Harish Dhami resigned from the Dharchula assembly seat on June 10 to pave the way for Chief Minister Harish Rawat to contest from that seat, regarded a Congress stronghold.
Harish Rawat took charge as chief minister on February 1, and needs to win an assembly seat before July 31 to remain CM. The by-polls are equally important for both the Congress and the BJP. While the Congress has 32 seats in the 70-member assembly, the BJP has 28.
